"When he returns he finds himself locked out". This is the opening of the story "Fahrenheim" written by Shai Agnon
The text introduces us with a man returning home after several years at war, and discovers that his house is locked and closed to him, his wife left the city and is living with her sister and her husband. He learns that his wife had a child who was born while he was at war, and in the meantime he died. Not only the fact that no one is expecting him, but also he himself has become a type of orphan who lost everything in life
Fahrenheim goes out on a short journey in an attempt to return and unite the man with his wife, but he finds himself lonelier than ever. All of the doors have been shut in his face, aside this last one in which he decides to close by himself. Fahrenheit is as his name, a person who is far from his home and from himself.
The astounding Agnonian text leads the reader through the complexity of the characters' soul, many things are revealed and others remain concealed and hidden throughout the entire story. Many questions remain open without solutions, and it is possible that this is where the main power of this uncomfortable story is concealed. The insight is finally revealed that basically humans are secluded beings, orphans in the world and lacking a real grasp of this fact.
Human only have themselves.
